En 1995, il avait été ouvert le tronçon du LEB (Lausanne-Echallens-Bercher) de l'avenue d'Echallens à Chauderon. En mai 2000, ils sont inaugurés son prolongement jusqu'au centre-ville, ainsi que la nouvelle gare terminus du chemin de fer. A ce lieu, est également aménagée une place (la place de l'Europe, inaugurée en octobre) et une "interface" de liaisons entre les transports existants, comprenant une passerelle au niveau du Grand-Pont.
La première étape sera terminée en 2001.
